CRAFT CORNER
History
Craft Corner was started in January 1993 by Marcelle Godfrey. There were 12 students in this session, taking Knitting, Crocheting and Paper Crafts; most of the students were from Westmount itself. Marcelle continued as Co-ordinator until January 1997 when Magda Davey took on the position.
The original idea was to offer an outreach through crafts, fellowship and fun, and to pass on to others the love and blessings given to us by God.
Many different crafts have been offered throughout the years and some have become standard favourites. We have had classes in watercolour painting, pyrographics, embroidery, knitting, crochet, cross stitch and "Kraft Katchup" where our students are encouraged to bring their unfinished projects and enjoy the fun and fellowship. Over the years, other crafts have included wreath making, origami, smocking, petal porcelain, beadwork, paper dolls, faux glass painting and candle making.
One exciting addition in the past couple of years has been that some of the students from Craft Corner have joined with our Seniors’ Fellowship at the "Magda’s Soup Kitchen" meeting in February, where they can share with more of our Westmount family and learn about us and our purpose in life.
All the teachers, kitchen staff, speakers and baby sitters were and still are volunteers from Westmount. A special tribute goes out to all the hardworking volunteers who have come out faithfully each Thursday to help out.
We advertise in various newspapers, send posters out to churches within our immediate area, and include regular updates on this site so that we can welcome newcomers to our sessions as well as joyfully reunite with old friends.
Craft Corner has filled a great need in the neighbourhood; from the small beginnings in 1993, the number of students has grown to between 45 and 50 at each session. We are always delighted to see new people come out and also welcome back old friends.
We are very thankful for our Lord’s leading in this ministry and pray that we will be able to continue to faithfully follow his directions.
General Class Information
Craft Corner is held once a week on eight Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with a refreshment break and short inspirational talk, usually given by our Pastor, in between. This break gives the students an opportunity to meet people from other sections and to have fellowship together. There are two sessions each year - the first beginning in January (winter term) and the second beginning in September (fall term). Each session lasts 10 weeks. The first Thursday is for registration, the last Thursday for Display Day when the crafts made in the past 8 weeks are displayed.
The cost for our classes has remained steady at $10.00 + cost of materials. These generously cover the cost of the refreshments/light luncheon. We also have been able to contribute to the purchase of things needed by Westmount such as new round tables, a DVD player and storage chests. This past year we have been happy to contribute to the cost of resurfacing the parking lot.
